Alkaline Diet Recipe #93: Quinoa & Apple Breakfast Warmer

Quinoa & Apple Warm Alkaline Breakfast

As winter really kicks in this transitional alkaline diet breakfast is warming, filling and absolutely packed with nutrients.

I absolutely LOVE quinoa. It is a complete protein, containing the full amino acid range and is rich in the alkaline minerals manganese, magnesium and iron whilst containing heaps of vitamin b2 and fibre.

It is quick and easy to cook, rather tasty (very subtle flavour) and gives you a great energetic start to the day. And rather brilliantly, the combination of complex carbs, fibre and protein means that quinoa will leave you with heaps of sustained energy and you will feel full right up until lunch.

Quinoa & Apple Breakfast Warmer

Serves 2

quinoa-apple-porridge2

Ingredients

½ cup of quinoa
1 apple
½ lemon
Cinnamon
1tbsp coconut oil

Optional: dried cranberries, nuts, seeds

Instructions

Cook the quinoa according to the packet instructions, but this is generally to rinse the quinoa in a sieve and then add 50% more water than quinoa i.e. for 1 cup of quinoa you’d add 1.5 cups of water. Then bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes.

As you’re reaching the end of the 15 minutes, grate the apple in and cook for a further 30 seconds, grate in the zest of the lemon and squeeze a little lemon in to taste. Stir through the coconut oil and serve in bowls with a sprinkle of cinnamon and voila! Delicious and warming.

Note: if you want to add the dried cranberries (and I only recommend this while transitioning) then throw them in just before you grate in the apple. Other options to top with are nuts, seeds and coconut yoghurt.

    Hi Ross,
I really enjoy your website and emails. Per my doctor I am to eat 60g of protein a day. As I eat more and more Alkaline and following food pairing for optimal digestion my desire to eat meat is waning. This has become a problem for me to hit my target 60g of protein. I still like and enjoy meat but the heavy hit digesting has become so much more noticeable. So my question is how can someone eat most of or all of 60g of protein a day without eating any soy or dairy and eating only a small amount of meat? I can’t seem to figure it out. I thought maybe you’d have some good suggestions.

Hi…am interested in an alkaline lifestyle because of inflammation which causes pain in my neck and back but I haven’t seen anything about apple cider vinegar which is a hot topic ! So, do you recommend APC ?

My husband & I make green smoothies every morning containing spinach, apple, carrot, berries, flax seed, chia seed, sunflower seed, Maca & kefir. How do I know if our smoothies are more acidic or more alkaline?

I am new to this , I can not have lemons , or vinegar right now , it makes my stomach burn & hurt , I also can not have Gluten , I am trying to figure out what foods I can have & learn new recipes!! If I were to eat oats when I first get up , it only sets me up for failure , I become lethargic , & start craving sweets !! I have been this way all of my life , I seem to do better with protein & carb . when I first get up . If I were to have strawberries right now they would cause me distress , so right now I need to look @ foods that I can have , that will satisfy me & not cause issues with acid reflex !

Love quinoa (keen-wa!) I have not tried it like this w/ apples for breakfast though. I will sometimes eat it w/ black beans & spicy for breakfast. I will try it sometime. I have some kasha (buckwheat groats) that I am thinking of making w/ maple syrup & dried fig. Out of fresh apples until I get to the city. This mountain town I live in does not have much organic.

I woke up yesterday morning, and it felt like someone had smashed my big toe on my right foot, with a sledge hammer! I couldn’t believe how bad it hurt, and the first thing that popped into my mind was GOUT! So I am willing to change ANYTHING, if it will keep this monster at bay! I changed my life style enough to beat RA;have it in remission for three years now. So now another battle to fight, and I am ready! (smile) I am going to the health food store this morning, and getting everything I need for a healthy Alkaline breakfast….and those two cups of coffee, that I allowed myself everyday, is out the door now! (grin) Thank you so much for all this information….I am well armed now to fight this next battle! But I think the RA & Gout are connected, and caused by the same things in my diet …am I right Ross?
    Thank You Again

      Hi Cherrie
I have RA and am trying to control it. Just found this website. I eat pretty healthily: fish eating veggie, Apple Cider vinegar every morning, sprouts wheatgrass, juicing etc. I make my own muesli (probably got all the wrong things in it, after reading things on this site). I make my own raw almond and rice milk. But RA is still advancing. Can you tell me what you did to make your RA go into remission?
      Best wishes Avril

    hey ross
thank you for helping me with getting healthy!
So many people suggest to me to feed my little son (3 years) with meat also because of essential nutrients.
Is it true that children of his age need meat in order to grow up healthy?
Because I really want to give him just alkaline food!!!

    Thanks
    Michael

I just can’t do it Ross…quinoa is one of my least favourite grains 🙁

For some reason, I can’t find the book Diet Alkaline Recipe Book (Ross Bridgeford) with all the supposed delicious meal recipes. The only order forms I’ve found thus far equate the cost in English pounds instead of dollars. Please advise.

Not that I’m anything to do with this site, but I’d advise you to buy it in pounds.

Hi Ross, what do you mean by “transitioning”? I love your quinoa & apple breakfast idea!

      Hi Nev

Hi Ross, what do you mean by “transitioning”? I love your quinoa & apple breakfast idea!

Transitioning means to move from where you are currently to where you want to be in a smart, steady, one-thing-at-a-time approach. Rather than going all out it gets you there sensibly.

      Thanks
      Ross
